Aromatherapy with Animals
The Healing Benefits of Applied Aromatherapy
Cold air diffusers are the BEST way to diffuse the oils to clean the air in your home, get the oils into your body and your pets, and as a natural pest repellent! Young Living offers a variety of quality cold air diffusers.
Balsam Fir, Idaho (Abies balsamea) This oil seems to be one animals naturally gravitate to of their own accord. I like using it for any type of muscle soreness. It is a great addition to helping arthritis or rheumatic pain. Asthma, respiratory and skin ailments all go together hand-in-hand or paw-in-paw, so keep that in mind as you seek to assist your pet holistically as the whole dog he or she is.
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) this is one of my favorite oils as it is so versatile and has many uses -- plus it’s great for cooking our human food too! It is another of the main oils in the raindrop technique. Basil can help as a muscle relaxant, and with inflammation in addition to being a natural antibiotic/anti-viral.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) A great natural spicy source for canine odors.
Cedarwood, Atlas (Cedrus atlantica) Great for canine skin rashes, freshens coat and skin, deodorizes and is good as an insect deterrent.
Chamomile, German (Matricaria recutita) Can be helpful for dogs that have arthritis (through massage), cuts, dermatitis, inflamed skin, insect bites, sores, strains, stress, wounds, pain, sensitive skin.
Chamomile, Roman (Chamaemelum nobile) Can be helpful for muscle pain on working dogs, puppy teething pain, great for burns, wounds, inflammation, allergic reactions, dry itchy skin, dermatitis, hypersensitive skin. Great for canine massage! I also like adding a drop or two to my calming spray as it assists in calming.
Cistus (Cistus ladanifer) -- also known as Rock Rose -- this is one of my favorite oils and it is in two of our aromatherapy sprays. It has long been studied for its effect on cell regeneration. It can help be helpful in calming your dog. It has a very strong aroma so it’s best to use diluted. At the same time that it is calming to nerves it can also be simultaneously uplifting.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) Can be helpful for dogs that are nervous and stressed (move, car rides, during show, thunder storms, vet visit). A great blend by Young Living is Peace & Calming and also Grounding that can help with these tense, nervous situations also.
Clove (Syzgium aromaticum) What a wonderful, all-purpose oil, a staple in our home. It has a numbing/analgesic effect while disinfecting. It can assist with arthritis, infections, and parasites.
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) A great natural reviving source for canine odors.
Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) Can be good for wounds. Is another of the raindrop technique oils. Can improve circulation.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Can be used for canine wounds, inflammations, cuts, muscle aches and may relieve some pain, can repel insects. I like using the blend, R.C by Young Living as it has ALL of the eucalyptus oils along with myrtle (which is also great at supporting the respiratory system), pine, spruce, marjoram, and lavender.
Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) Good for anxious dogs and puppies, may help with minor wounds, sores, bug bites. A rare scent. (Used in two of our aromatherapy sprays). This is my favorite for using on fatty tumors.
Galbanum (Ferula gummosa) Used in two of our sprays it is balancing, and also rises dramatically in frequency when used with frankincense or sandalwood. It assists with digestive and skin issues. Because it has analgesic properties it can be helpful in assisting with arthritis or other canine pain issues.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) A great insect repellent -- great against ticks!
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) This oil is found in Di-Gize by Young Living which is another of my favorite blends to use with dogs. It can assist with car sickness, as a digestive aid, arthritis, and respiratory issues.
Grapefruit(Citrus x paradisi) May help canine coat and skin care, great for smelly oily coats and has a quite happy aroma. Can help as support for depression, obesity, liver disorders, anxiety, and tumor growth.
Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) Seems to help heal most paw cuts, hot spots, canine dermatitis, irritated dog skin, and minor wounds. It can also regenerate nerves and chelate out toxins and chemicals from the liver. This oil is also found in Panaway blend by Young Living among others.
Hyssop (H. officinalis) Can be great for dog skin problems. We use it for paw sores and canine hot spots. It is another of the essential oil ingredients in two of our sprays.

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans )A delightful and natural spicy scent for canine coat. May stimulate dogs. Anther great support for arthritis, also anti-parasitic.
Orange (Citrus sinensis)A delightful source for natural citrus scent! Can be calming and good for canine eczema. Uplifting. It’s great to diffuse with cinnamon bark or Thieves blend for a nice and healing holiday smell!
Patchouly (Pogostemon cablin) Can be used it on cracked and cut paws, canine dermatitis and eczema, all fur care and as an insect repellent. A major ingredient in Animal Scents Ointment.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) May repel insects and fleas, also seems to have a cooling effect on itchy canine skin. Good for bad dog breath as well but raw meaty bones are your best bet for that particular problem. Another great one to support arthritis and found in the raindrop technique, plus assists in digestive and parasite problems.
Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica) Eucalyptus like scent, may help skin rashes. Great support for the respiratory system.
