Online radio show: Animal Talk Naturally

Long bio:
Kim Bloomer is a doctor of veterinary naturopathy, published author, host of two online radio shows, and an avid blogger and writer on natural dog health.

Her interest in the world of animal health goes back to her childhood when as a ten-year old she proclaimed she’d be a veterinarian when “she grows up”. Dr. Bloomer later proceeded to work in a variety of animal-related jobs with her first job in a pet store where she noticed the health of the animals less than desirable. She then went on to work in various dog kennels and eventually veterinary medicine.

The deciding factor in not becoming a veterinarian was the discovery that she wanted to work with well animals and keep them that way.

Through her own natural health self-discovery as Fine Arts major with a dance emphasis at the University of NM, Dr. Bloomer desired to always know more about natural health and then apply what she learned to her own health.

Because of her training in traditional veterinary medicine she thought all she did for her wonderful dogs was the right way to care for them although there was always a bit of nagging doubt in the back of her mind.

Because of the love of her three special dogs, a Great Dane, a Golden Retriever and now a Neapolitan Mastiff, Dr. Bloomer learned what her dogs needed all along to thrive and not just survive. She felt compelled to share that knowledge with the world rather than rest upon that knowledge for her own benefit.

This led to her ongoing blogging efforts to share how to care for animals naturally, with a special emphasis on dogs, by writing about it. Her blogging efforts culminated in her authoring the book Whole Health for Happy Dogs with holistic veterinarian Dr. Jill Elliot. Her writing has been published on many websites such as Suite101.com, in newspapers, and in magazines such as Animal Wellness Magazine and the Chihuahua Connection and online magazines such as Pet Home Magazine and House Pet Magazine.

She hosts a weekly online radio show, Animal Talk Naturally which was born in October of 2005 with like-minded colleague, Dr. Jeannie Thomason. The show is all about empowering pet owners with the knowledge to care for their animals naturally. They bring on guest experts each week to talk about their area of expertise in natural animal health and the human-animal bond. Join the LIVE show each week on BlogTalk Radio at Holistic Pet Audio on Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 2:30 PM Eastern.

The two also now host another online radio show, The Dog View, with friend Jan Cooper for special needs situations.

Dr. Bloomer continues to do research into natural animal health and welfare. She finished her Bachelor of Science degree in Holistic Nutrition in January of 2008 and will begin her studies for her human Doctor of Naturopathy with the Clayton College of Natural Health in 2008.

WELCOME to Aspenbloom Pet Care

4th of July

Aspenbloom Pet Care

Hello and welcome to Aspenbloom Pet CareSeeing Your Pets Good Health Bloom!

My name is Kim Bloomer, B.S., V.N.D., and this is my beautiful rescue boy, Shadrach - a Neopolitan Mastiff - to the right of me! Shadrach and I have been sharing with pets and humans like you very valuable information on pet nutrition and natural holistic alternatives to conventional pet care for 5 years now. Before I go further, if you have a lot of specific questions and need help with how to go about transitioning to natural care for your dog, then please make an appointment with me for a private consultation. Here is the link to use to request a consultation:
http://aspenbloompetcare.com/consultations

Our journey into natural pet care began when Shadrach was just about a year old - he is now approximately 8 years old as of August 2007. I had been doing natural care for myself for many years but I just didn’t think about Shadrach needing the same thing. I believe primarily because I worked in traditional veterinary medicine for many years, I just thought I was doing all the right things for Shadrach. You know, the usual premium kibble, vaccinations, and so-called heartworm/flea/tick “prevention” meds (which are really pesticides) and so on. Well Shadrach was not only not thriving but he was constantly health-challenged as a result. Our dogs can’t tell us in words what is wrong but their bodies can speak loud and clear. That’s what Shadrach did. He was sick a lot and was itchy and coughing all the time. I did LOTS of research and discovered that dogs are STILL carnivores and that they need raw meat and bones to thrive, little to no vaccinations, and natural care products without chemicals in our yards, home and internally to be healthy. Well, Shadrach is a big, handsome, muscular boy now with a great shiny coat. Although now in his older years he constantly challenges me to think outside the box and continue to learn and dig into ways to help him have the quality of life I believe all animals deserve.

What really sent me headlong into natural health care was when Shadrach had a ‘weird’ skin condition so against my instincts I took the lazy way out and went to his traditional veterinarian to seek guidance. I knew they would find it idiopathic (not know what it is) and prescribe the usual potion: antibiotics and/or steroids. I was right and I was also wrong to not go with my instincts and do the right thing for Shadrach. The vet prescribed antibiotics - both topical and internal and Shadrach got even sicker! He began vomiting, even though we stopped the oral antibiotics he didn’t stop vomiting, resulting in aspiration of vomit into his lungs. We rushed to the emergency hospital for animals. The resultant care was insulting at the very least and negligent at best. When we picked him up early the next morning, Shadrach had feces (or better known as poop) all over his backside and his leg was swollen up huge because they had put a bandage on his leg too tight. They only added insult to injury with the huge bill we received and Shadrach was sicker than when we began. We were so angry we decided that from that moment on, Shadrach was going ALL natural - the way God and nature intended!

We put him on an all meat and bone diet (originally I fed him cooked now he eats raw or slightly cooked but bones are always raw), whole food supplements and we used Animal Scents Ointment and Shampoo to help heal his skin ailment - which we figured out that he was allergic to the new paint in our home. We got to the root problem rather than just throwing more drugs at him. We also gave him Ningxia Red Juice and essential oils. He got well.

We know you’re here reading our website because you want your pets to be well too. I’m very glad you are. We’ll be sharing about all natural pet care and welfare. We have a LOT of articles, books and other resources to empower you with UNlearning to care for all your animals, NATURALLY to see your pets good health bloom!

I am a veterinary naturopath now (degree from the Kingdom College of Natural Health) and continuing my studies into natural human health through the Clayton College of Natural Health having received my Bachelor of Science in Holistic Nutrition in January 2008 and continuing into my Doctor of Naturopathy.

We also have an online radio show Animal Talk Naturally! so you can listen to my co-host and colleague, Dr. Jeannie Thomason and I, talk about natural pet health and the human-animal bond with weekly guest experts - you can join the live show at Holistic Pet Audio on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 2:30 PM Eastern.

Shadrach’s blogs, Bark N Blog and A Dog’s View, will help you learn a whole lot more about natural health and welfare for dogs, and what is going on in the world of animals. We also have a special needs or events online radio show all about DOGS! Just go to The Dog View to check the schedule for upcoming shows.

I also offer consultations in natural pet care via email or phone -just go to our Consultation Page for details.

We represent the highest quality natural pet product lines, essential oils, and nutritionals. We offer natural treats, supplements, natural flea and tick remedies, wormers, arthritis and allergy remedies, natural skin and coat care, and so very much more. All because I know YOU love your pets as much as I love mine -which is why we offer you so many natural alternatives and high quality -because animals are worth it! We also have our very own t.h.e. bloomingdogs aromatherapy sprays for dogs.

If we don’t have it here for you, we’ll find it for you! We care so much about all animals -we care as much as you do or we wouldn’t be doing this! We want to help all your pets live long and healthy lives!!!

We look forward to serving you! Have a pawsitively tail waggin’ day!

Since we’ve been contacted by several not agreeing with my statements on the essential oils, I will state here that I have researched and gotten my information from my own personal experience and also from doctors, veterinarians, aromatherapists, pet care givers, and more who use the same essential oils I do with great success.

So I must state a disclaimer here for all of you:
The only oils we use and refer to in ALL our posts and articles are Young Living Essential Oils. We DO NOT use any others and would not state what we do here on any other brands. Whether you agree or not, these are working exactly like I state here for me and my pets. We adhere to the French and German models of aromatherapy. Thank you.

WHAT DOES HOLISTIC MEAN? Does it seem mystical or guruish, or even about organic foods? Well, it’s not really that. Holistic means WHOLE. The entire animal in our case. The body, mind and spirit of the animal. You care for the entire animal BEFORE it is sick, preventatively through proper species specific feeding – what is natural to the species-, the immune system is built up naturally through species specific feeding, and whole food supplementation, through proper stimulation of the mind for the animal which includes work and play for them all according to their species, the spirit of the animal through love and interaction.” -Kim Bloomer

Dear Kim
I’m just writing to thank you again for all the info you sent me and hooking me up with dogtor ‘J’ . I really appreciated the time you took to converse with me…Thanks again for your support and good luck with all the good work you’re up to

That totally makes sense that people are most interested in pet nutrition and how that affects everything else–it seems like the most basic part, so fundamental, and with all the focus on nutrition in general these days, it’d be hard to figure out what *else* to do before getting the nutrition squared away. I really like how you use that as the foundation and then build out from there–it makes the whole process seem so much more approachable and doable.

All my best,
Jes

Kim Bloomer is, hands down, the most knowledgeable natural pet care educator I know. She truly cares about animals, wanting the very best for all animals, and is deeply committed to naturally caring for all animals to prevent problems. It’s obvious that Kim spends time researching natural pet care in order to offer the most up to date and accurate natural pet care information available. Kim has a way of explaining natural pet care that is down to earth while still extremely information packed, making natural care a manageable task for any animal caretaker. I can’t think of any other person that I would want advising me on the care of my precious pets.

Dee Kreidel, artist, pet lover, mother of 3 children

Kim’s gentle approach and straightforward instructions made the process both simple and easy–in my experience, natural health can be kind of intimidating, and with Kim there was nothing intimidating about the process whatsoever. She keeps her eyes on the goal, but never makes you feel rushed or overwhelmed.

Jessica Albon, writer and business owner

When Kim Bloomer coined the term “pet educator” for what she does, she was right on the money. Learning natural pet care from Kim is like learning how to bake chocolate chip cookies from your mom. Her love of animals and her desire to see every pet owner enjoy sharing their lives with a happy, healthy pet shines in every sentence!

What some veterinarians have to say about vaccinations:

Dr. Ronald D. Schultz, Ph.D..- “Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions. The percentage of vaccinated animals (those vaccinated only as puppies) protected from clinical disease after challenge with canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus and canine adenovirus in the study was greater than 95%.” Current and Future Canine and Feline Vaccination Programs. Dr. Ronald Schultz is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine, UW-Madison. Schultz, R.D. - Current & Future Canine & Feline Vaccination Programs. Vet Med 3: No. 3, 233-254, 1998 . A chart provided in the report shows immunity levels for all vaccines currently given to dogs lasting a minimum of 5 years with most lasting 7-15 years!

“We should not allow politics and tradition or greed to enter the decision (on frequency of vaccination). Changing vaccination schedules doesn’t have to mean less profit, but that you have more income from some clients and less from others. Veterinarians and the industry need to have guts to be honest with ourselves and assess the risk and not be trapped in tradition.” — Dr. Dennis Macy in “Are We Vaccinating Too Much?” AVMA Journal, 1995

Dee Blanco, D.V.M
- “You take healthy animals and often very quickly after you vaccinate, you can see simple things like itching of the skin or excessive licking of the paws, sometimes even with no eruptions. We see a lot of epilepsy/seizure, often after a rabies vaccination. Or dogs or cats can become aggressive for several days. Frequently, you’ll see urinary tract infections in cats, often within three months after their [annual] vaccination. If you step back, open your mind and heart, you’ll start to see patterns of illness post-vaccination.”

Charles E Loops DVM - “Homeopathic veterinarians and other holistic practitioners have maintained for some time that vaccinations do more harm than they provide benefits. Vaccinations represent a major assault on the body’s immune system…. Vaccine induced chronic diseases range from life-threatening conditions such as auto-immune crises to conditions destroying the quality of life of an animal as in chronic skin allergies.”

Vaccinations: All Veterinary Schools in North America Changing Vaccination Protocols - Recent editions of the Senior Dogs Project’s newsletter have reported on the ever-broadening trend of eliminating vaccinations for adult dogs, except for rabies, where required by state law. We have now had a report that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Here, in a nutshell, are the new guidelines under consideration: “Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus (MLV) vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet (i.e., canine distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not ‘boosted’ nor are more memory cells induced.

“Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia. There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines. Puppies receive antibodies through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies and kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year 4 months) will provide lifetime immunity.” srdogs.com

Our weekly online radio show/podcast:

Listen to Animal Talk Naturally on internet talk radio

Empowering you with UNLearning to care for your animals Naturally!

Animal Talk Naturally! is hosted weekly by Kim Bloomer & Jeannie Thomason along with Kim’s dog, Shadrach, who does all the blogging for them on their podcast site. Join them each week as they talk about how to care for your pets preventively, naturally using what God has provided in nature.

They also hit on some controversial subjects including the pros and cons of traditional medicine with a focus on vaccine protocols, the big pharma agenda, our toxic environment, emerging superbugs, pet welfare and more! From raw feeding to dog fighting, the pet food industry agenda to natural herbs and essential oils, Kim & Jeannie cover the gambut of topics to help you be informed so your pets will be well.

Kim & Jeannie bring in a wide variety of industry experts to help share the passion their show is known for by their audience. Join them each week for an often passionate, sometimes serious, sometimes funny, but never boring show!

What is a podcast feed?

Podcasting makes audio files available to you via a ‘feed’, usually what you see associated with those funny orange and white “RSS” buttons. Our feed automatically delivers updated audio files to your PC. You don’t have to come back to find Animal Talk Naturally’s new content - rather, the system will look for our updates and automatically download for you to your podcast “reader” or client. I use FeedDemon to read all my rss feeds including podcasts. You can then listen to the podcast on any portable media player or computer or even save it to a blank CD - you don’t have to have an iPod…how novel is that?! Of course you can always listen to our show streamed daily at the online radio station CoolCast OR at All Pets Radio on Wednesdays.

Instead Bonnie sees into the body for the root cause of illness. We’re all about getting to the root cause of anything so this spoke volumes to me. We can’t prove or disprove her work, but we can tell you that some people are just naturally gifted in whatever their chosen vocation.” - Dr. Kim
