Heart Health for Dogs

I_LOVE_my_dog Often I’m asked what can I suggest in the way of a natural remedy that will be supportive for heart health in dogs. I may sound like a broken record to many people but the truth of the matter is that the health for any organ or body part, the body as a WHOLE lies in the proper nutrition. Dogs are opportunistic scavenger carnivores so they need a raw meaty bone diet to thrive.

As an animal naturopath, my focus is always going to be on the whole health approach not on the reductionist viewpoint that is so prevalent in our society today that focuses solely on addressing symptoms. While I can appreciate the need to ease symptoms, until we get to the root cause of those symptoms then we’re not fixing anything no matter if we use pharmaceuticals or natural remedies. When we start with a proper diet, then we’re headed in the right direction.

At that point is when I can then suggest that dog owners take a look at supporting the dog’s body further with some additional supplements. Here are some of the suggestions I make to my own clients in addition and always in conjunction with a raw meaty bone diet:

*CoQ10 is nutritional supplement for cardiovascular and periodontal function of dogs and cats. Because CoQ10 is fat soluable it is best used together with an oil. For carnivores the best oil to use is fish oil. *Kronch Salmon Oil for dogs and cats provides the natural essential fatty acids (Omega 3s) they need. It helps as an anti-inflammatory and supports joints and muscles (and the heart IS a muscle!).

HawthornBerries*Hawthorne berries are antispasmodic, cardiac, diuretic, sedative, tonic and vasodilator. They can act as a direct and mild heart tonic. The best way to use these berries with your dog (or cat) is in the form of a tincture/extract. Mountain Rose Herbs offers Hawthorne Berry Extract or as a glycerite which is really a better form to use with animals. Glycerites are liquid herbal extracts that use vegetable glycerin as the extraction menstruum instead of alcohol.

*Aroma Life by Young Living is an e.xcellent essential oil blend made specifically for heart health. Pulsing with life, this vibrant blend energizes your life force. It is best applied over heart energy – front and/or back. *And another product that Young Living has that includes the much needed magnesium (which by the way a raw diet does provide in the correct balance), wolfberries (high on the ORAC scale and high in natural Vitamin C), hawthorn berry, CoQ10, Vitamin E, and several essential oils all in one product is CardiaCare.

*And always probiotics & enzymes – the staples of life!! Here is a blog post on Bark N Blog about probiotics:
