Disease, from a Naturopathic Viewpoint

According to naturopathic philosophy the cause of disease is the violation of nature’s laws. In the Philosophy of Natural Therapeutics by Dr. Henry Lindlahr, he states “The primary cause of disease, barring accidental or surgical injury to the human organism and surroundings hostile to human life, is violation of nature’s laws.” (page 19)

According to traditional medicine, disease is something to be wrestled down, strangled and conquered as if disease were an alien thing invading the body. That particular viewpoint thinks of disease as outside of the body attacking it in a Trojan horse sort of way with microbes or germs and bacteria ever on the lookout for unsuspecting human beings and animals to infiltrate and destroy.

I find it rather astounding that traditional medicine has taken this approach to disease because it doesn’t mesh with how nature works at all according to the laws of nature (which include nutrition, fresh air, exercise, sunshine, pure water, rest, spirituality). I personally believe this to be based more on economics than health and disease prevention.

For every truth there are ten lies to refute the truth. But as Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation nor does truth become error because no one will see it.’ An even more sinister viewpoint on pushing a propagated error as truth was spoken by none other than Adolph Hitler “All propaganda must be so popular and on such an intellectual level that even the most stupid of these toward whom it is directed will understand it. People can be made to perceive paradise as hell, and the other way round, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise.” – Adolf Hitler, in Mein Kampf

Maybe this helps explain, somewhat, why the laws of nature for health are so apparently ignored in the reductionist training that the mainstream medical profession receives; possibly because the focus isn’t really on health but on treating symptoms which they label as a variety of diseases.

Naturopathy focuses on nutrition as the foundation for health. Nutrition is one of the primary laws of nature. According to Stewart Mitchell in his book, A Practical Guide to Naturopathy, health is actually determined by nutrition. He states “Naturopathy upholds that the single most important determinant of health is nutrition”. (Page 13)

If we do enough wrong in violation of the laws of nature, starting with improper nutrition, then a downward spiral of diminishing health begins. When the body isn’t properly supported through what I always say to my own clients in natural animal health, “a species appropriate RAW diet” then the body will begin to go out of balance or homeostasis creating a state of dis-ease in the body. Disease is the absence of health which means that there isn’t a variety of diseases to be treated but rather a person or animal whose body needs help getting back into homeostasis – one disease, one health.

Unfortunately we’ve been taught to believe that there are so many diseases to be wary of that can only be treated with a variety of strong pharmaceuticals, surgery and/or chemotherapy that it’s just a matter of time until we contract one or a variety of them!

Allopathic medicine appears to work in the short-term because it is so strong that it overwhelms the body and suppresses the symptoms the body was presenting as a way to alert the person to dis-ease; body dysfunction. Once the symptoms are gone the person believes that he or she is now well from that particular “illness”, until the next thing comes along. Most likely they will also never connect the dots between the increasing decline in health as being one dis-ease rather than a multitude of illnesses. If this pattern is allowed to continue the body will ultimately not be strong enough to keep working correctly. I liken it to cleaning up a puddle that keeps coming back in your home and rather than seeking out the leak, you keep drying up the puddle until you have a full blown major plumbing problem with a flooded basement in the house that is MUCH more costly to fix and may have caused structural damage.

That is what happens in the body and why in the long-term allopathic medicine just does not work. It was never intended to be a panacea for all that ails us. It was meant to be a short-term fix. However, the “treatments” are a very lucrative enterprise which makes it even easier to keep both the doctors-in-training and the patients in the dark about true health and wellness.

Most of the allopathic drugs are symptom suppressors, but from a naturopathic viewpoint that is absurd! Mainstream healthcare sees germs and viruses and bacteria as the enemy but in truth they are not the enemy. They can only thrive in a body that makes it suitable to thrive. In other words if the body is a good host the germs will arrive! That is a sick body. The germs don’t come and make the body sick, the body is sick so the germs arrive.

Naturopathy works because it doesn’t focus on attacking and trying to annihilate the symptoms the body is presenting. Rather it utilizes those symptoms as a guide to the root cause of the dis-ease and addresses that at its core all while supporting the body with what is provided us in nature. Naturopathy cares for the person as a whole not as separate parts and symptoms. The person or being is a whole unit consisting of mind, body and spirit. Naturopathy not only embraces that truth but it knows that when one tiny facet of that being is out of balance the entire being is out of balance.

Naturopathy knows that treating symptoms and treating the body as though each part and parcel were independent of the other makes absolutely no common sense whatsoever. Naturopathy also addresses the core issue and that is proper nutrition. Without correct fuel a car will ultimately break down. A body improperly nourished without proper maintenance through exercise, fresh air, sunshine, pure water, etc., will ultimately pay the price by not being healthy and ultimately dis-eased.

We are ultimately responsible for the bodies we inhabit – and we are also responsible for our animals. I have a friend, Ms. Fahim the Herb Queen, who says all the time on her online radio show, “It’s not my body, it’s not the doctor’s body, it’s YOUR body.” And she is absolutely right. Naturopathy recognizes that fact. Naturopaths guide and teach this to their clients so they will be empowered with the knowledge to be in charge of their own health AND that of their pets.

Naturopathy seeks to correct the imbalance through nature, taking nature’s long-term approach to total wellbeing not in a quick fix that won’t last.
