The New York Times reported that fish oil is linked to lower risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The study published by Dr. Ernst J. Schaefer in the November 2006
Archives of Neurology showed that people who had the highest levels of the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were almost half as likely to develop dementia as those with lower levels of this important fatty acid.
The Times wrote: “The average level of DHA among all the participants was 3.6 percent of all fatty acids, and the top 25 percent of the population had values above 4.2 percent. People in this top one-quarter in DHA levels had a 47 percent reduced risk of developing dementia.”
The list of health benefits of omega-3 oil continues to grow. The fish oil super-nutrient DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) has been found to suppress the development of fat cells and may lead to reduced body fat.
Researchers from the University of Georgia published their study in the new issue of Journal of Nutrition. Fat cells, called adipocytes, were halted in their development, leading the researches to the conclusion that DHA “could mediate a reduction in body fat.”
